Firstly, check council restrictions on the number of pets you can own in the area. Some local councils require permits if you have more than 2 pets. Additionally, if you’re purchasing an apartment, it pays to double check that the owners corporation allows pets in the building.

If an apartment isn’t for you, finding an affordable home in the suburbs with a backyard is also still achievable on a budget. A two-bed home in Fawkner or Albion, both within 20kms of the CBD, will set you back less than $600,000.
